When we’re not busy solving the mysteries and paradoxes of video production, you can find us doing the deep dive into any crime dramas we can lay our ravenous eyes on. Procedural? Unsolved? Historical? It doesn’t matter–just keep ’em coming!
One of our favorites has always been the novel Briarpatch by Ross Thomas. So when we heard USA Network was adapting it into a ten-part anthology drama, we donned our fedoras in celebration. But then, like in any enticing crime saga, we were spun into a complete tizzy when USA asked us to help capture key interviews with the show’s entire cast, including Rosario Dawson, Jay R. Ferguson, Kim Dickens, Alan Cumming, Brian Geraghty, and Edi Gathegi. We were happy to play (not so much a rookie) partner to USA Network’s grizzled investigator, hot on the case.
The show was filmed almost entirely in Albuquerque, New Mexico and that’s where the scene of the crime–ahem, sorry, the shoot location–took place. We captured elevated interviews with the suspects, er…the cast over three days, but we did a bit better than the camcorder from 1997 you see the police on television use. We got all confessions–jeeze, uh, interviews–on two Sony FS7s shot in glorious 4K. We also supplied a sound recordist, gaffer with a full grip truck, a key grip, as well as a production assistant. All of these diligent and experienced officers (we hope you’re playing along by now) were entirely local to Albuquerque, too.
You can check out the video below, and be sure to read the final report–err, watch the show.
