For 60 years, BBC’s University Challenge has been a mainstay of the British quiz show genre. Consisting of two university teams testing their knowledge, the show’spopularity has undoubtedly cemented its place among shows of its ilk, such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI.
In celebrating its anniversary, the BBC looked back on Challenge‘s most memorable contestants—one of which being Brandon Blackwell, an American who competed with his Imperial College London team.
Atlantic interviewed Blackwell in his native Queens, New York, in the diverse Woodside neighborhood, to talk about his time on Challenge and his strategies for studying for the show. Conducting both Blackwell’s walk-and-talk and key interviews was our very own mastermind field producer. Our director of photography/one-man-band captured said interview and a plethora of b-roll around Queens with their tried-and-true Sony FX9 package.
