Newark, New Jersey had come a long way before COVID-19. Over the last few years, the city transformed into a popular destination for a diverse array of restaurants, for companies to cultivate new talent, and for people to plant roots and start families. It became a community that looked after its own and flourished as a result. It’s that same mentality that keeps Newark going, despite being hit exceptionally hard by the pandemic.
Newark Working Kitchens helps get nutritious meals to those who need them most while keep restaurant doors open and the flames of hope burning. Audible, Marcus Samuelsson Group, and other local companies have sponsored the program and led the charge in conjunction with city officials. Over 500,000 meals have been delivered to over 10,000 residents.
Everyone involved in Newark Working Kitchens has a story to tell, each one providing an essential and collective comfort. Audible felt those stories should be shared, and enlisted Atlantic to capture the program in action. We provided a documentary crew to film key interviews with restaurant employees and owners, as well as with recipients of the meals. For an exceptional program, an exceptional camera was needed: the Panasonic Varicam LT. And of course – we kept safe by wearing masks and observed social distancing at all times.
