Atlantic Gets Serenaded by Iris Williams and Rhys Meirion

s4c_logo_2014-svgIris Williams is nothing short of a legend. Born in South Wales, she’s traveled the world and brought musical joy to all, having performed scores of classic Welsh songs, cabaret, charity benefits, and most notably jazz. At the height of her popularity, she hosted her very own show on the BBC, and was featured in S4C’s “Portrait” series as well.

But what happens when you pair the wonderful Iris Williams with another world-famous Welsh-born singer? If you guessed the loveliest duets ever, you’re completely correct.

Rhys Meirion, a classical and opera singer, who’s been featured in concert broadcasts on the BBC, has hosted a show on S4C Welsh TV where he performs exclusive duets with other aurally-gifted folks. In the series’ final episode, Rhys decided to go out with a bang and harmonize with Iris Williams. And to top it off, Atlantic got in on the action as well.

Since she’s been permanently living in New York, Rhys got to know Iris a bit over a chat in Times Square, and some other of Iris’ favorite spots in the city before performing at the Manhattan Inn Piano Bar. Atlantic provided crew and equipment to record the interviews with them, and the masterful duets and individual ballads they performed. Iris performed “Autumn Leaves,” while Rhys performed a classic Welsh song, “Unwaith Eto yn Nghymru Annwyl.”

While the series has already ended, you can check out a short promo for the show posted on Facebook here.
